Dear Delorie Folks,
I am the founder of the #programmers channel on the DalNet IRC system
and for about the last six months have been a very frustrated individual.
The nature of my concern is contained in the file GCC281B.ZIP, and possibly
GPP281B.ZIP as well. (Though I have not confirmed the latter.) Here's the
bug ---
GCC281B.ZIP creates the directory of /djgpp/gcc281b/bin and places its
executables inside that "folder." The ENV file created still maintains the
compiler path as %djgpp%/bin, which means that any NEW INSTALLATION cannot
locate all the components! Moving the files has been attempted, but it
would seem that the executable itself wants to find its other binaries in
the gcc281b/bin location, and this appears to cause the library location to
be misunderstood.
In an attempt to correct this I have directed people to the
GCC2721B.ZIP and GPP2721B.ZIP files, which makes the compiler operational.
However, the mirror sites have removed this version from FTP, causing me to
maintain a copy upon my local machine for distribution to those who use the
Zip-Picker and get the 281 version.
Please, I beg you, look into this problem. I have found DJGPP to be an
easy to use and install, nicely implemented, p-mode compiler for general
use. I have supported both those that get the 281 or earlier versions and
are developing upon them, and have recommended djgpp for those who want to
learn. However, the above archive would seem to have some serious
problems, while the FTP mirrors have removed the corrective action. Please
help!
If a more complex set of installation directions are the cure, please
send me a copy! The 2721 version installed without a hitch, and I get a lot
of folks asking how to make the compiler work, how to locate the libraries,
etc., all symptoms from this basic path error.
Thanks for listening,
Sandra.
