Thank you, now I have some clue as to what's going on, although I followed the 'readme' included with allegro and compiled everything with the 'make'. It seems to me that all the included examples were intended to be executable programs, but I don't see why the great majority didn't turn out that way. Maybe I'll try reinstalling from scratch.
