Is there any chance there's a directory called `string' somewhere
there?

If not, maybe you have a too low setting of FILES= directive on your
CONFIG.SYS (although usually that causes another error message).

If all the above doesn't help, post the shortest program which
triggers this problem, and somebody will help you.
