I think gxx only includes the standard C++ library, libstdcxx, not libgpp,
which isn't standard C++. The standard includes a string class if you want to
use it. If you're using older code, you'll just have to remember to link with
-lgpp. As for why you have to use -O2, I don't have any idea. That seems
rather odd.
