That's what I did with date for interactive use. For portable shell scripts I
suppose you'd say something like:
#! $DJDIR/bin/sh
if [ "$DJGPP" = "" ]; then
FINDDIR=
else
FINDDIR=$DJDIR/bin
fi
# ...
