Can you try with another video board (not Matrox)?

Are you sure? So then it crash before the mouse initialization?

I think you can use a second monitor, get an Hercules card and a monochrome
monitor and avoid the video mode switch. Here you can get it for 45-60 dolars,
no much compared with the whole cost of your machine.
