Can anyone point me at a C library suitable for use with DJGPP that would 
allow me to relatively easily compress files (or better yet, regions of 
memory) into zip-compatible archives without having to shell out to PK-Zip?

I've looked at the Info-zip sources, but I'm not programmer enough (yet) to 
extract just those portions I need and incorporate them into my own code...
