Would there be any point in using the v1.x sources to see what changes were made
from the original X11R5 sources to help in directly modifying the X11R6.3
sources? Or are those changes more of what you mention below rather than just
compiler issues?

Unfortunately, you are wrong, or somebody would have done this a long
time ago.
The old v1.x port makes heavy use of some features in GRX 1.x, which
were not (and cannot be, AFAIK) ported to DJGPP v2. The features I'm
talking about are merging of the mouse keyboard events into a single
event queue.
