That's not what happens, AFAIK. `redir' is a DJGPP program, so when it runs any other program, the DPMI environment is active and in 32-bit mode. If you try to invoke a 16-bit DPMI program such as the Borland compiler under `redir', it won't run because it needs a 16-bit DPMI environment.
