it seems like you are under the impression that prefixing a vaiable with
the register keyword is _definitely_ going to result in that variable
being put in a register. this presumption is incorrect. the register
keyword is merely a suggestion to the compiler. it is actually free to
ignore that, and has to ignore it under certain situations (for example,
if the address of the variable is taken.)
