That's not how edit works :-)

Alt+009 is equivalent to pressing the Tab key. Under Edit, pressing the
Tab key inserts enough spaces to get you to the next tab point.
Therefore, under Edit, Alt+009 inserts enough spaces to get you to the
next tab point.

Ctrl+P, on the other hand, waits for a keypress and inserts, verbatim,
the keypress received. For some reason though Ctrl+P followed by Tab
doesn't work, so you have to use Alt+009 instead.

I just checked this in Windows '95 edit, in a Windows '95 DOS box.
(Perhaps you are using DOS 6.22 EDIT... even I steer clear of *that*...)
