You've seen some weird machines then ;-) The IDE interface
(Integrated Drive Electronics, harddisks) have their own controller that
is completely separate from the floppy controller (although it may be on
the same expansion card, or even integrated into the same chip).

Agreed - this has nothing to do with the poster's problem.
