Dunno if this will help but my PC does exactly the same trick full stop
with DOS boxes...  It seems that for some reason the '|' (OR) and '¦' (ALT
GR+`) keys have been swapped.  In my case pressing the ALT GR+` key gets me
the OR character OK.  And yes, it is annoying! :-/
