apparently my problems with the filenames arose when i used xtgold
(which works rather like midnight commander) to selectively unzip the
files from perl54b.zip, it seems to have stripped the extensions when
the root filename exceeded 8 chars.
since other people found the problem in perldoc also, i don't feel so
bad about having been told it didn't exist.

apparently because i use dos batches instead of *make* i am a subhuman.
