lcc and DJGPP are two different things.  I think DJGPP is a better
compiler for beginners and finishers alike.

It certainly is adequate for the beginning C student, has full
documentation of the standard C library, and comes with a debugger GDB. 
It does not get into the way like other compilers do.  You just follow
the edit->compile->debug cycle.  You learn a lot inside the GDB.
