Did you check the readme file?  It has instructions for rebuilding allegro.
 
I believe -Wno-sign-compare fixes things but double check to make sure.
As for speeds, its pretty application specific.  There should be a new 
pgcc snapshot real soon now (hope hope hope) which will have the Haifa
Scheduler, 
so an even bigger speed increase.
