Hi,
I REALLY hate contributing to this retarded flame war, but this just
sent me reeling...
> Besides the Game Quake, professionals don't use free compileres --
I don't suppose you've ever actually worked as a "professional?" Or
maybe played one on TV? Read an article about one perhaps? My employment
this past summer (and most likely upon graduation) is at Clariion, a
divsion of Data General. All our code is compiled with, you guessed it,
gcc. My suitemate works at Rome Labs, where they also use, yes, gcc.
Because of the reasons listed by other people, (portability etc...) gcc
is the compiler of choice for MANY people, and is indeed used by
"professionals." I haven't bothered to check, but if you go to
www.cygnus.com, I bet you'll find GOBS of companies using gcc for
serious, commercial applications. (Cygnus provides tech support licenses
for gcc in locations like Clariion where a totally free compiler could
be a liability.) Do a shred of research in the future...
