As a matter of fact I did exactly this last month, a Windows app to
capture data. But, the device was digital, and the software worked fine,
but someone futzed up the hardware... I tore my hair out trying to find
bugs in my code, only for it to be the hardware all along!
In this instance Windows was needed, because of its graphical interface
and DDE. DDE was needed so the data capture app could not only display the
data, but forward it to graphing/data analysis software. The application:
engineering, where stresses and tensions and pressures and thrusts and
temperatures needed to be measured and monitored electronically while
testing stuff.
