Do you mean you are adding a child menu without any contents, ie. the
very first item in the list has a NULL 'text' field? That is indeed
going to upset the Allegro routines: they weren't written to handle zero
size menus. Instead, try giving the sub-menu a single entry with an
empty text string ("" rather than NULL).
