If you get them via WWW, try and find an email address, either the
author of the actual .midi (or whatever) file, if it wasn't written by
the owner of the site, email the owner anyway. S/he might know the
author or the origins of the data.
Most people will probably say "Sure, but credit me in the program for my
work."
BTW which competitions?? :)
