Yes, you can trap I/O errors - have a look at the libc reference for
errno, fopen, fgets etc for a start. Um, are you using C or C++?
Please also consider getting a C or C++ text book from your next public
library (hm, I'm almost sure that there are C/C++ tutorials on the
internet, but I can't remember where - maybe someone in comp.lang.c or
comp.lang.c++ knows).
