There is a program called SVGATextMode which is for Linux. But there is
also a limited-functionality DOS version. It lets you tweak your VGA card
register settings to get a higher resolution.
For example, I use an 800x600 mode for text. Using an 8x16 character cell
(which looks much better than the 8x8 characters used in VGA 80x50) I can
get an effective textmode of 100x37, with well-formed characters. The
problem is that most DOS programs assume a screen size of 80x25 (they
don't have an ioctl() which can query the screen size, unlike xterms and
the Linux console).
However, since you can modify the sources of RHIDE (and SVGATextMode
source is also available) you can actually set it up to use a 100x37 (or
even better-quality mode, depends on your card and monitor) by default.
