There IS a 16-bit Linux called Linux/x86 (and yes, it runs on 8088
hardware). BUT it does NOT use gcc, it uses a version of the ANSI/K&R
compiler which comes with Minix (AFAIK). gcc simply CAN'T be ported to
machines less than 32-bits, unless you give up a lot of functionality.
I've used the gcc for the MC68HC11 (8-bit CPU) but it "emulates" 32-bit
registers using memory -- slow, and inelegant.
