Having started with C and DJGPP just last summer, I might recommend what
worked in my own case: getting both README.1ST and the FAQ, and reading
both before downloading anything else.

While README.1ST was quite clear to me as a DOS user, the FAQ obviously
stretched my understanding in many areas -- but gave me the vital
information I needed to plan for a sane and rather smooth DJGPP
installation.

Specifically, while as a raw C newbie I might not understand all the stuff
about far pointers, video support, and so on, I could and did very easily
understand the parts about system configuration, memory management, and 
problems with QEMM 7.xx.

I suspect that it was _much_ more fun to upgrade to QEMM 7.53 _before_
downloading and installing DJGPP, thus avoiding the known QEMM bugs
described, as well as at least being aware of the VM bug remaining even in
7.53 and the possibility of using the _free_ CWSDPMI.

Also, I learned the valuable lesson that I should get the original GNU
Emacs for DOS -- not yet included back then in the DJGPP suite itself.

Of course, people have varying tastes. However, I feel that getting
acquainted with both README.1ST and the FAQ before trying to download or
install DJGPP is the best policy. (Since I didn't yet have info installed,
I just read the FAQ as a text file.)

Another suggestion: reading both README.1ST and the FAQ at leisure, and
making a checklist of files to ftp, can make the process of getting DJGPP
more efficient and enjoyable.
