I used to get a similar error when when I tried compiling under LINUX.
My problem was that the LINUX make utility was expecting TAB
characters where I had spaces.
I had created the makefile under DOS and then used it under LINUX and
it did not like it much. My solution was to edit the makefile with
VI.
