I looked into this kind of project, too. I was not planning to do
JAVA, but the concept is the same. It occurs to me, and IMHO, that
the real task is to look into writing a new front-end for GCC. You
can do this on any system with a port of GCC, including sunos and
GNU/Linux. In fact, your project should be substantially easier than
mine since language front-ends to GCC are said to be easier to write
than back-ends. I wanted to do the latter.
