Yes, I did it. No change. My guess about alignment was certainly wrong.

Have a try: compile and link it with -g switch. Then run it. If you
have a LAN card, it should write its MAC address.  Run it under GDB
without setting any breakpoint and you will get a MAC address of zeroes.
