ok. my newsserver officially sucks today. lets see if it lets me post yet...
i think the problem here is the phrase 'off topic'. to prevent any topic having
any overlap with any other newsgroup would be silly. in order to understand
and be able to use djgpp it's necessary to have a certain amount of
knowledge regarding gcc optimisations, regarding c stuff, regarding all number
of other topics. if you've ever seen comp.lang.c you'll know exactly why
these questions are asked here ;)
what i would agree with you on though is the freewin95 thing which was heavily
crossposted. that crossposting was unnecessary and most of the replies were
from other groups were the average iq of the newsgroup was below 5. the
discussions here tend on the whole to be fairly intelligent and not just
slanging matches and flamewars.
this is the only newsgroup of the 10 or so i read that i don't have a killfile
for. that says quite a lot in my opinion. my killfile for rec.games.programmer
kills just over 50% of the posts every day.
i think on the whole the posts start on-topic and remain to the most part
of interest to the general community here. i might be wrong of course, perhaps
these posts are annoying other people here? if they are then obviously there's
reason to think about dealing with the problem. but to moderate a newsgroup
which can only be described as one of the best content newsgroups available
seems like a waste of effort on the part of the moderators.
regards,
nik
