Because it supported the multi-volume format I used ten years ago. On
Unix:
tar cvf /tmp/foo.tar .
split /tmp/foo.tar 1440k /tmp/foo-split
dd if=/tmp/foo-split.000 of=/dev/fd1
dd if=/tmp/foo-split.001 of=/dev/fd1
