I forgot to add - I tested both versions (Allegro and my own lib) using the exact same conditions, which includes invoking univbe to get vbe 2.0 for a 640x480x8bpp mode (I specified grx_set_mode(5,640,480,0,0)) as well as compilation with the -O3 option. The only changes are ports for graphics primitives, eg putpixel.
