Many thanks to those who answered my oft-repeated question:  Why doesn't
Allegro 2.1 make correctly?

After downloading 2.11, it works like a charm.

And, to be honest, it exceeded my wildest expectations.  I'm surprised
it's
not bundled more often with DJGPP (which, yes, is pretty fat already,
but
hey, what's a few more pounds between friends...)
