Have you looked at the slang library? It is available from
ftp://space.mit.edu/pub/davis/slang as well as several European sites:

ftp://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/lang/slang/
It has its own screen management and keyboard input routines that work
on MSDOS, OS/2, VMS, and Unix.
