I shall assume that you know assembly language...
The interrupt you want is 0x10h
The services are referred to as Vesa Bios Services...i.e for
resolutions above 640x480x16...
The vesa implementation has changed...you used to simply have to 
load say :

mov ax,101h
int 10h

that would have got you going...The VBE has changed...
Now you have to first find out what modes the video card 
you work on supports...
All this is explained in a document called:
The VESA BIOS EXTENSION Core Functions Standard...
The File is archived as VBE20-11.exe

There is some nifty code in here as well...
