To attempt an answer: the manual for Image Alchemy PS 1.8 states that
"DOS/4GW is the DOS Extender used by Alchemy PS," a sentence which begins
an 11-page appendix on "Configuring DOS/4GW Pro." It is bound, I believe,
to the executable ALCH386.EXE. If only I were better informed about
protected mode -- as I should be -- I could likely be more helpful.
In any case, I can certainly imagine lots of higher priorities <grin>,
and hope only that I've provided some interesting information.
