I don't think that the speed of the computer is the deciding factor. I
think it is a problem with certain clone sound cards. I have a sound card
that says it is 16-bit, but that only provides compatibility for Sound
Blaster Pros; it's a Reveal Sound/FX Wave or some such card. All digital
sound played with Allegro comes out too fast, both on a 486/33 and a
Pentium/100. On a true SB16 the sound is fine. I think that the card
acts as a 16-bit sound card with Windows sound system, although I've never
tested it. Anyway, I don't know of a work around, but I do suspect that
the fact that these cards are sort of 16-bit is the problem (of course,
this is just a guess). I'm sure that there's some sort of additional
check that could be added to Allegro to prevent this, but I'm not hardware
savvy enough to say exactly what. Digital sound works fine with almost
all other programs, too. The only program that I've found that gives me
the same kind of double speed digital sound is Wolfenstien 3d.
