I don't want to spoil the sheer fun of this thread (really!) but Shawn
"Mr Allegro" Hargreaves says he spells it "pallete" because that's how
the makers of his old Amiga (?) C compiler spelt it. They were
Americans, I believe, and as everyone knows, Americans can't spell.

That's why they invented C, so they wouldn't have to remember so much.
