Can it be ar has problems with LARGE .a files? Like
SWORD 2.10b compiled with -g? Gives 1.8M .a file...
and sometimes, after compiling *some* modules, and
linking... ld chokes. Which might mean that the
problem is ld's, not ar's.

Any ideas? Unfortunately, I can't recall the exact message
ld gives...
