This limitation also exists in v1.x under DPMI.

Oh, I'll guess probably never. Morten Welinder and I discussed an algorithm
and memory layout which would allow automatic stack expansion under DPMI 0.9,
but you would lose some memory protection, and it would require a a custom
crt0. Having DPMI 1.0 would also solve this, but Microsoft has chosen
to kill this standard by ignoring it. Oh, and automatic stack expansion
under DPMI breaks near pointers to DOS/devices - so choose your poison. If
anyone wants automatic stack expansion bad enough to code/debug it, I'd be
happy to provide the design/specifications. Until then, it's a dead issue.
