You can run DJGPP, which is D.J. Delorie's port of gcc for
the 80386-and-better Intel chips to DOS.  Comes with its
own DOS extender (which gcc itself *needs* in order to run).

Get yourself a 386/486 with as much memory as you can afford.
I've run it on a 386-25 laptop with 5 Mb of RAM, but more
RAM would have been faster.
