If you define a rule it has to be like this:

test: test.o
<TAB>gcc -o test test.o

The first charakter in the second line HAS to be a TAB. If there are some
SPACEs instead , you get this error message. maybe your editor converts TABs 
to SPACEs without your knowledge...
