This is due to a bug in the beta 1 libc, which didn't like CTRL-Z characters
as the end of file.  This is fixed in the libc of beta 2, but most of the
binaries didn't get rebuilt so the bug is still seen in any .exe file
older then the libc.a file.  Workaround: remove the ^Z's (they don't need
to be there) or rebuild GCC and all the utils.
