Ok, the problem has now mysteriously fixed itself! I moved the files
to another directory, and went to go hit my head against the wall for
a while. When I came back, I tried once more to compile the same files,
and it worked. Where there had been an error, there was none!
I have no idea what caused the error, and even less idea what fixed it,
but at least it's gone now.
