If there current "noise level" contitues or even gets worse we might
have to make the news group moderated. I am not at this time
proposing we do it, but here are some ups and downs:
+ With properly adjusted software at the moderator(s) no phone sex
"spam" or "Make Money Fast" posts will get through. Forged
approvals can be detected (PGPmoose) and such articles canceled
automatically and immediately (and never sent to the mailing list).
+ No or at least few frequently asked questions get through.
+ Completely off-topic posts, like the one below, can be silently
ignored or the poster could be sent a semi-angry form letter.
- It takes some work from one or more moderators. I don't know how
much.
- It's a lot less "interactive" than unmoderated because the turn-
around time is higher.
For now I'll ask you all to:
(1) Don't answer spam/mmf/off-topic posts; Spammers and MMFers will
not see the answer anyway.
(2) If you must answer such posts, or FAQs, (which is a bad idea) then
answer by email only;
(3) If you really think it is imperative that a thousand people see you
mastering the subject (it is not, however) then go back and check
how many already did that first. One master is usually sufficient.
I have seen arguments to the effect that only answering by email causes
a waste of effort because a lot of people will do so. I say that that
happens anyway and causes too much noise bothering people who play by
the rules.
Some off-topic question deserve more attention than others.
Occasionally someone asks what turns out to be a generic C or C++
question. These are usually posted by people who hang out here
regularly. I often answer thesee by email. This is opposed to
people who "just couldn't find a better place, and maybe someone
here can help".
