After I discovered the compiler warnings misdirected into a tmp file,
which had been causing the first of my two weird errors, I corrected the 
cause of the warnings that were being put in the tmp file. Then I
recompiled. Strangely enough, *both* the funny tmp file errors went away.

The problem remains, though: a) What caused those warnings to be output to
the tmp file instead of the screen?
b) How do I prevent this weird mishap from occurring in future?
