Sometime ago, I asked about a good port of Emacs for Windows,
preferably working with X also. I received several requests from
people who were also interested in this info, so I am posting it here.
The only choice(which also works with X) seems to be WinEmacs,
which is available from ftp.net.com:/pub/pe/pearl as a series of 5 zip
files, windemo1.zip through windemo4.zip and wem_el.zip, which has the
elisp files. Seemed to me though that the last file was not required,
since the other zip files seemed to contain the elisp stuff, but I am
not 100% sure.
Anyway, although I know almost nothing about DOS and Windows, I
managed to successfully install it and run it, thanks to the good
documentation in the README file. I had eXceed X server software
running, but it automatically detected X. I didn't have to do
anything. It runs in its own window and you can create any number of
windows(frames) as you want. So far as I can tell it is impressive.
It says that it supports asynchronous subprocesses, and I tried
ange-ftp but got back a mesg. saying that async subprocs are
unsupported. also my attempts to change the cursor color didn't
succeed, although the bg/fg colors could be changed. I didn't test the
other nifty features viz. windowz drag/drop etc. You can read about
the features in the README file.
By the way, once in a while you get that registration popup...
