If you must use MS Windows, there is a very nice, small editor called
pfe (Programmers' File Editor). It's obviously not emacs or jed or
vi, but it certainly beats using the Win Notepad. Freely available
at an ftp site near you. I think I found it at one of the UK ftp
sites.
