OK, problem solved: at the n+1th reading of TFM, I found a suggestion that the
files might have the wrong line-ending; as I'd conscientiously used the -a
option of UNZIP, there was a fifty per cent probability that that had been the
cause, so I ran DTOU as suggested and lo and behold, Info now works.
