Subject: GO32 burns GnuEmacs 19.28 under MS-Windows

Help!

I've been attempting to install Gnu Emacs 19.28 on my Windows box, but it
causes random, frequent
and alarming crashes in itself or just about anything else that happens to
be running at the time (including
KERN286.EXE, WINOLDAP.MOD, PROGMAN.EXE and other key Windows modules).

I'm pretty sure that this is related to GO32 in some way, as:

1. GO32 will report exceptions from its dpmi handlers if run in debug mode
2. All crashes take the form of either 'This application has violated
system integrity by executing
an illegal instruction' or general protection faults related to
handles in the range 0001:0xxx. This
suggests a problem with memory management at the selector level.

I'm am also sure this problem is related to my configuration in some way as
I have seen this release
work on other Windows boxes. However, I nothing I do seems to make any
difference. I have run the
thing with a completely bare-bones configuration (ie. no drivers etc) and it
doesn't make any difference.

My questions are:

1. Has anyone else ever had problems like this?
2. Where do I look now? Is there something else I should change or
look at that I haven't thought of?
3. Is GO32 a good idea under windows? Shouldn't windows be used as the
DOS extender and be allowed
to take over all DPMI services?

My configuration is:

Intel 486 dx2 @ 66 Mhz
16M memory
1 IDE drive
1 SCSI drive with Future Domain 1680 card

I am desparate.

Thanks.

James
