It might be also worthwhile to run an fgrep job looking for
all access() calls in the utilities previously uploaded to
SimTel.  I know, it's a mess, but how can we otherwise be
sure there aren't more obscure bugs like this?  Binutils
would be the most important place to look first, I would say
(how about those strange error messages from ld one user
reported recently?)
