AFAIK, no. However, I believe PD-Tar (or some similarly named program)
can do this sort of thing--check simtel for tar317us.zip (or is it 318 now?)
The GNU tools (and hence out of laziness the GNUish tools) tend to rely
on the O/S for I/O support; something like Linux has this, but not DOS.
